Since 2023, the Phu Quoc Youth Union, in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Viet Nam, has established eight green collection stations on the island in various wards and communes, including Duong Dong, An Thoi, Cua Can, Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, and Tho Chau.
Located near densely populated areas, the green collection stations aim to provide a designated place for residents to properly and hygienically dispose of their waste. Additionally, the stations display visually appealing messages to raise public awareness about environmental protection, encouraging people to dispose of their waste correctly, reduce plastic bag use, and avoid single-use plastic products.
WWF and the Phu Quoc Youth Union created the green collection station model to promote environmental protection, aligning with initiatives like "Saturday of Volunteerism" and "Green Sunday." These efforts are part of Phu Quoc's youth movement to safeguard the city's environment.
The activities aim to raise public awareness about environmental protection, climate change response, and the responsibility of local communities to protect their living spaces. They also encourage greater responsibility among youth and the broader community to reduce plastic waste in the city.
At each green collection station, the Phu Quoc Youth Union (Kien Giang) has also implemented a "Golden Hour for Plastic Waste Exchange." On the first Saturday morning of each month (from 8 to 9 a.m.), residents can bring plastic waste to exchange for gifts. This initiative not only promotes waste reduction but also rewards participants. For 3 kilograms or more of clean and dried plastic waste, such as plastic bottles, cups, straws, styrofoam boxes, and plastic bags, participants can receive gift baskets worth between 20,000 and 100,000 VND.
