On August 16, Viet Nam and member countries Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and China attended the 9th Mekong-Lancang Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Hang led the Vietnamese delegation. During the meeting, Viet Nam wanted to strengthen cooperation on water resources and hydrological data for the Mekong-Lancang region. Viet Nam proposed three key initiatives to realize the development vision endorsed by Mekong-Lancang leaders:

First, Viet Nam suggested that a modern and developed Mekong-Lancang region should ensure seamless trade, investment, and connectivity among member countries. It proposed expanding market cooperation, strengthening sustainable supply chains, and connecting transportation infrastructure. Additionally, Mekong-Lancang should prioritize enhancing scientific and technological capabilities and innovation through effectively implementing the Mekong-Lancang Innovation Corridor.

Second, yo build a green, sustainable, and inclusive Mekong-Lancang region, the countries must work closely on adaptation to natural resource management and climate change. Viet Nam supports the initiative to enhance Mekong-Lancang water cooperation and proposes increased collaboration on flood and drought management, sharing hydrological data, conducting joint research, and considering the organization of a Mekong-Lancang Water Day to raise awareness about sustainable water management and protection.

Third, Mekong-Lancang cooperation should continue to foster friendly neighbor relations and deepen connections among the six countries' people, focusing on a people-centered approach. As the Mekong-Lancang cooperation mechanism approaches its 10th anniversary in 2025, Viet Nam proposed to enhance further and diversify people-to-people exchanges, youth exchanges, local and business connections, and seek new collaborative ideas from the younger generation of the six countries. Viet Nam also suggested considering the establishment of a "Mekong-Lancang Water Day" to increase awareness about sustainable water management.

The proposals and contributions from Viet Nam were not only acknowledged but also greatly appreciated by the member countries. Their incorporation into future Mekong-Lancang cooperation documents is a testament to Viet Nam's influence and respect within the region.
