The Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration (MONRE) established an early warning system for thunderstorms, lightning, rain and floods.

This is one of the systems that integrates many types of data from monitoring systems and is entirely automatic. The system was built to provide early forecast information and warnings for thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and heavy rain; it serves to warn of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena that impact the community.

This system continuously monitors all-weather developments across the country through photos from earth observation satellites, domestic weather radars, rain measurements, and a nationwide lightning location network. The system can also monitor and control the data quality of all automatic rain measuring and meteorological stations throughout the network.

Mr. Tran Hong Thai, General Director of the Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, said that this is the first time Viet Nam has an early warning system for thunderstorms and lightning, with 10 radars, covering the entire country. With this radar system, Viet Nam can collect more information for warnings. These devices will provide information about cloud images and thunderstorms. Thereby, you can see the thunderstorms and cyclones to include in warning information.

Through this system, the forecasters can give warnings within 30 minutes to 3 hours before heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning, which will help avoid damage to people and property.

The Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration also implements a nationwide lightning warning map for provinces. Especially for areas with much lightning such as Ha Giang, Quang Ninh...
