In response to the 2024 "Campaign to Make the World Cleaner", the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam, in collaboration with Can Tho's Department of Natural Resources and Environment, launched an environmental cleanup event on September 18. The activity focused on waste collection and ecological sanitation around the Cai Rang floating market in Ninh Kieu district.
The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage behavioral change among the public regarding waste reduction and cleanup efforts on the river and surrounding environment. It also sought to enhance waste collection for recycling and reuse, and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders to improve solid waste management in Can Tho.
Ms. Dzeneta Mulabegovic, Strategic Advisor to the UNDP Resident Representative in Viet Nam, emphasized that Can Tho needs comprehensive solutions at all levels and sectors, particularly in changing behaviors around waste disposal and effective collection, sorting, and treatment of solid waste. She also called on the entire community, organizations, and individuals to participate in and support activities to clean the environment and reduce waste for a greener, cleaner, and more livable future.
Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Can Tho People's Committee, urged international organizations to participate in environmental protection through this campaign.
