On September 17, the Esri Viet Nam GIS User Conference 2024 occurred in Hanoi.

With the theme "GIS – Uniting Our World," the 2024 conference served as a platform to introduce and update the latest geographic information system (GIS) technologies, such as Digital Twin, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). These advancements, a beacon of hope, aim to enhance GIS applications in natural resource management, environmental protection, climate change response, and contribute to socio-economic development, national defense, and security.

Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, from the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information of Viet Nam, stated that Viet Nam has established an essential legal and policy framework to promote development and spatial data infrastructure (SDI). This includes the Law on Surveying and Mapping, a decree guiding specific provisions of the law, and the Strategy for the Development of Viet Nam's Surveying and Mapping Industry, which focuses on building a national geospatial data infrastructure through 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Additionally, information technology infrastructure is being upgraded and invested in. State management agencies and relevant organizations have implemented various projects to develop geospatial databases, GIS systems, and related services.

Regarding developing the national geospatial data infrastructure, Mr. Tuan highlighted that the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information concentrates on building and managing this infrastructure. This ensures the integration and sharing of geospatial data among agencies and sectors at both the central and local levels. The aim is to support the development of e-government, transitioning towards a digital government, digital economy, and digital society while also connecting with regional geospatial data infrastructure networks.

The Department has completed the construction and trial operation of the Viet Nam Geospatial Portal, designed to support the management, storage, sharing, and exploitation of data. This portal will meet the administrative needs of ministries, sectors, and localities for planning, socio-economic development, national defense, disaster prevention, climate change adaptation, and other societal needs.

During the conference, attendees were also introduced to the prominent features and technologies of GIS software (ArcGIS), developed by Esri, which facilitates the collection, management, analysis, and display of geographic information.
